Fact: There is currently, no state that requires a private divorce mediator to be licensed or certified. As a result, there is no shortage of people who have simply hung out their shingle as a divorce mediator, some with questionable credentials. So how exactly do you find a good divorce mediator? Look for someone with strong knowledge in the state’s divorce laws. Just remember that divorce mediators are not supposed to give legal advice, however they but can dispense legal information. Divorce mediators must have a graduate degree in law and at least 60 hours in mediation training/experience, and a commitment to following the Model Standards of Practice for Family and Divorce Mediation.
